Royal Navy Monitors Russian Task Group in English Channel and North Sea
The Royal Navy has closely tracked a Russian task group as it returned from Syria, ensuring the security of UK waters. The operation involved Type 23 frigate HMS Somerset, minehunter HMS Cattistock, RFA Tidesurge, and naval helicopters.
The Russian task group, which included the destroyer RFN Severomorsk, landing ship RFN Alexander Shabalin, and two transport ships, MV Sparta IV and MV Siyanie Severa, was monitored as it made its way through the English Channel and North Sea toward the Baltic Sea.
HMS Somerset, supported by a Merlin helicopter from 814 Naval Air Squadron, began trailing the Russian escort south of Portsmouth. Tanker Tidesurge had previously tracked the destroyer through the Strait of Dover. Using advanced sensors and naval aircraft, the Royal Navy maintained a vigilant watch over the Russian vessels, ensuring safe passage through UK waters.
Commander Joel Roberts of HMS Somerset stated, "The integration of ships, helicopters, and NATO aircraft reflects our commitment to national priorities and unity with our allies." Lieutenant Commander Rob Garner of HMS Cattistock added that his crew was "sharp and ready to protect the UK's security."
The operation also involved RAF P-8 Poseidon aircraft, gathering crucial intelligence as the Russian group sailed onward. Armed Forces Minister Luke Pollard reaffirmed the UK's commitment to defending its waters, highlighting the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation for national security.
This operation underscores the strength of NATO's coordinated maritime and air operations in safeguarding UK interests.
