The Sultanhani is the first of two tugs to be ordered by BOTAŞ and stands out as one of the first dual-fuel tugs to enter service in Turkey, as well as one of the few LNG-powered tugs in the world. The tug has a length overall (LOA) of 39 metres (130 feet), a moulded beam of 15 metres (49 feet), and a moulded depth of six metres (20 feet). It is powered by two 3,000 kW (4,000 hp) dual-fuel engines, driving Voith Schneider propellers, enabling a bollard pull of 80 tonnes. This robust propulsion system allows for efficient towing in both forward and astern operations.
The vessel is equipped with an LNG tank capacity of 40 cubic metres (1,400 cubic feet) and a diesel capacity of 164 cubic metres (5,790 cubic feet). The innovative dual-fuel system helps reduce emissions significantly, even when operating on diesel, aided by an IMO Tier III aftertreatment system.
In terms of design, Sultanhani features a forward-mounted Voith Schneider propeller arrangement, allowing the LNG tank to be located aft of the engine room. This configuration ensures that the gas system and any associated hazardous areas are safely separated from the accommodation block, enhancing crew safety. Additionally, the wheelhouse provides 360-degree visibility, offering the crew exceptional situational awareness critical for towing, escort, and ship assist operations in busy harbour waters.
Once operational, Sultanhani and its sister vessel will be stationed at the Regional Directorate of Petroleum Operations in Ceyhan, a key transport hub for oil and natural gas imports from the Middle East and Central Asia. This move reflects BOTAŞ’s commitment to improving the sustainability and efficiency of its operations, contributing to the global shift towards greener maritime solutions.
