The situation was further complicated by a crane used to transport the marble debris, which probably destabilized the ship. Following the impact, part of the Marina di Massa jetty collapsed and the area was inevitably closed.

There were also thirteen crew members on board the Guang Rong who, luckily, were not injured and managed to get off the ship. After the alarm was raised, the Coast Guard of the Marina di Carrara Port Authority intervened immediately. Firefighters, carabiners, police and 118 rescue vehicles were on the scene.
