Drifting Deck Cargo Ship Crashes into Pier in Liguria

Cyprus flagged, the deck cargo ship Guang Rong began drifting in the sea between the Italian ports of Marina di Carrara and Marina di Massa on January 28. Local news sources report that the ship was half-loaded with marble debris when it drifted, possibly due to strong winds, and hit the Marina di Massa pier.

The situation was further complicated by a crane used to transport the marble debris, which probably destabilized the ship. Following the impact, part of the Marina di Massa jetty collapsed and the area was inevitably closed.

There were also thirteen crew members on board the Guang Rong who, luckily, were not injured and managed to get off the ship. After the alarm was raised, the Coast Guard of the Marina di Carrara Port Authority intervened immediately. Firefighters, carabiners, police and 118 rescue vehicles were on the scene.

On the morning of January 29, the first operations began to observe the damage and secure the wreckage. The Genoa Coast Guard Underwater Unit continued a thorough inspection of the hull in order to assess the condition of the vessel and determine the procedures necessary for its removal.
