The expansion comes in response to a sharp rise in global demand for its products, driven by increased interest in sustainable solutions across the shipping industry.
The company offers a range of technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Its WindWings® system, designed to provide wind-assisted propulsion, has attracted significant attention alongside other innovations such as the Aerobridge® superstructure, hull optimization for commercial vessels, and foiling technologies for hybrid and electric smaller vessels. Demand has been particularly strong in Asia, where sales agents in China, Japan, Greece, and Spain have contributed to a surge in inquiries.
John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, highlighted the growing importance of meeting decarbonization targets: "As regulations like FuelEU Maritime and the EU Emissions Trading System take effect, there is a greater need for solutions that reduce emissions while cutting operational costs."
WindWings® technology underwent testing on the MV Pyxis Ocean bulk carrier between August 2023 and March 2024. Independent assessments by DNV Maritime showed a 32% reduction in main engine energy consumption per nautical mile under favorable conditions. This performance data, backed by a guarantee from BAR Technologies, has strengthened client confidence and accelerated adoption. Currently, five WindWings® ships are under construction, with additional projects in the pipeline.
To support this growth, the company has bolstered its workforce, adding engineers with expertise in software development, composite design, and performance simulation, as well as expanding its sales and marketing team. Among the key hires is Sales Director Tom James, a Chartered Engineer and fellow of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects. James, along with new Sales & Marketing Manager Jess Murphy and Sales Engineer Oliwia Galecka, is tasked with driving commercial growth and partnerships globally.
In 2024, BAR Technologies also expanded its collaborations, including strengthening ties with Mitsubishi Corporation, which transitioned from being a client to an official agent for WindWings® in Japan. The company also maintains partnerships with CM Energy Tech in China, Abacus in Greece, and WindWaves in Spain, enhancing its global reach.
Headquartered in Portsmouth, BAR Technologies is positioning itself as a leader in maritime sustainability through continued investment in innovation and workforce development. With regulatory pressures increasing, the company aims to provide the maritime sector with solutions that balance environmental compliance with operational efficiency.
