Sweden's Sirius Shipping and Gasum Partner on New Bio-LNG Bunker Vessel

Sweden’s Sirius Shipping has teamed up with Finnish state-owned energy company Gasum to develop a new bio-LNG bunker vessel.

Sweden’s Sirius Shipping has partnered with Finnish state-owned energy company Gasum to develop a new bio-LNG bunker vessel.

The 7,800-cubic-meter vessel, jointly owned by the two companies, will be built at RMK Marine in Istanbul, Turkey, and is scheduled for delivery in 2027 under a Gasum charter. The investment amount has not been disclosed, but Gasum stated that the project aligns with its strategy to secure LNG and bio-LNG supplies in northwestern Europe as demand grows.

Gasum CEO Mika Wiljanen noted that shipowners increasingly view LNG and bio-LNG as effective solutions for reducing emissions in maritime logistics, rather than waiting for alternative technologies that have yet to reach maturity, scale, or infrastructure readiness.

The new vessel, named Celsius, will be 112.9 meters long and classified as Ice Class 1A. It will feature fuel-efficient and low-emission technologies, including a hybrid battery system. Additionally, a 27.7 MW gas combustion unit will allow the vessel to provide cool-down and warming-up services for other ships’ fuel or cargo tanks.

This project builds on the existing collaboration between Sirius Shipping and Gasum. Gasum previously chartered the Coralius, a 5,800-cubic-meter LNG bunker vessel built in 2017, from Sirius. Additionally, the Donsö-based company has been managing Gasum’s small-scale bunkering unit Seagas since 2012.
