The vessel was en route from Jiangyin, China, to Nevelsk when it encountered trouble during the night. There are 20 crew members on board, and no injuries have been reported.
The ship is carrying 706 tons of fuel oil, 56 tons of diesel fuel, and 1,000 tons of coal. Authorities have confirmed that the vessel sustained damage; however, no fuel leakage has been detected. Despite this, regional authorities have declared a state of emergency in the Nevelsky district to ensure readiness for any potential escalation of the situation.
Severe Weather Affected Rescue
Governor Valery Limarenko of the Sakhalin region announced that a high-alert regime had been introduced, with emergency services and marine rescuers on standby. Limarenko confirmed on his Telegram channel that severe weather, including a strong storm, has delayed rescue and salvage operations. "Decisions regarding the unloading of cargo or removal of the vessel will be made once the weather improves," Limarenko stated.
The Russian Investigative Committee has opened an inquiry into the incident, focusing on whether maritime safety protocols were violated.
Sakhalin Island, located in Russia’s Far East, is part of the Sakhalin region, which also includes the disputed Kuril Islands. These islands have been a longstanding point of contention between Russia and Japan since the end of World War II, preventing the two nations from finalizing a peace treaty.
Authorities will continue to monitor the grounded vessel as conditions develop. Further updates are expected once weather conditions improve, allowing rescue teams to approach the site.
