Somali Pirates Resurface, Threatening Merchant Vessels

According to a warning issued by British maritime security firm Ambrey, Somali pirates may be resuming shipping attacks.

The company reported the sighting of a suspected pirate action group departing from Marreya, near Eyl in northeastern Somalia.

Merchant vessels operating in the region have been advised to heighten security measures, including deploying armed guards where conditions allow.

The European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Operation ATALANTA confirmed that Somali pirates hijacked a Yemeni-flagged dhow on Sunday. This vessel is believed to be serving as a "mother ship" to facilitate further attacks on merchant shipping.

Somali piracy, which was at its peak between 2008 and 2012, has been largely suppressed in recent years. However, incidents have increased since March last year, with several vessels and crew members being seized.

Situation in Gulf of Guinea

Meanwhile, piracy threats have also been reported in other regions, such as the Gulf of Guinea and Southeast Asia, highlighting the ongoing risks to global shipping routes. Security experts are calling for continued vigilance and cooperation among shipping companies, navies, and maritime organizations to prevent further attacks.
